And its no sacrifice
Just a simple word
Its two hearts living
In two separate worlds
But its no sacrifice
No sacrifice
Its no sacrifice at all
Mutual misunderstanding
After the fact
Sensitivity builds a prison
In the final act

I do hope the analysis so far has been interesting…I try to do as much as I can with the character limit. In addition to Bernie’s own words (which I can provide & will do so on the eventual site), you also have to consider the lyrical sources for the song as all the SWTP songs were homages in some way to the R&B artists of the 60’s & 70’s. If you look at the Aretha Franklin song, “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” you will find some lyrical similarities to the lines in “Sacrifice”.

To continue,
I have studied this song for years & use Bernie Taupin’s own comments on the song to base what ultimately is my interpretation of the song. However, I am 99.9% it is accurate but only Bernie knows for certain what it means. But he has said he sees it as a bookend to “Your Song”. In that song, the couple is young & in love. He labeled them as naive to love. In Sacrifice, he paints a picture of someone who is in their 40’s, who has experienced a lot & has seen it all.

The thing he is talking about is the love/relationship/marriage. If I am a married man & cheat on my wife, I am potentially ruining a marriage that I value. In this instance, the potential loss or forfeiture of the relationship and value is downplayed with that line. Sacrifice? No, it’s just a simple word. And to sacrifice something or to forfeit something of value is anything but a “simple word”. Just a great lyric. And then he justifies it by saying the two hearts/two worlds line.

@7Kaiser7
Actually the line
“It’s no sacrifice, ust a simple word”
does I think refer to love. (at lkeast make you think about this)
You expect something romantic to follow, but…
“It’s two hearts living in two seperate worlds”
says that it is in fact the opposite of falling in love.
That isa cruel and uxpecxted turn, but exactly how you feel if u suffer from a breakup.

The song is a great lyric, Bernie Taupin said it was one of his favorite lyrics. From the first line, “it’s a human sign, when things go wrong” hint that something happened. Also, the second verse opens with “Mutual misunderstanding, after the fact” describes the situation after it’s come to light. Another point to consider is that Bernie was going through some marital troubles at the time he wrote this (late 1988)..they subsequently divorced in 1991. He also called it a bookend to “Your Song”.

I listened a few more time, and to me it’s still vague, if the affair did or did not take place, or only in his mind and heart. Lets hear other opinions, see where this goes.

This song is about divorce…that’s what the “sacrifice” is, and why there are “two hearts living in two separate worlds.” The divorce came about as a result of infidelity, but that is not the “sacrifice” to which he refers.
